Efficient Discrete Element Modeling of Particle Dampers

چکیده
Particle dampers’ dissipative characteristics can be difficult to predict because of their highly non-linear behavior. The application such devices in deformable vibrating systems require extensive experimental and numerical analyses; therefore, improving the efficiency when simulating particle dampers would help this regard. Two techniques often proposed speed up simulation, namely adoption a simplified frictional moment reduction contact stiffness, are considered; effect on simulation run-time, ability bed sustain shear deformation, prediction dissipation performance is investigated for different case studies. stiffness studied relation maximum overlap between particles, as well contacts’ duration. These simulations carried out over wide range motion regimes, frequencies, amplitude levels. Experimental results considered well. All performed using GPU-based discrete element tool coupled with multi-body code MBDyn; execution time compared those other solvers.

Discrete Element Modeling of Dynamic Compaction with Different Tamping Condition
Dynamic Compaction (DC) is a common deep compaction method that is usually used for densification of coarse-grained soils. Although traditional continuum-based models such as the Finite Element Method can be successfully applied for assessment of stress distributions or deformations induced by DC, they are typically not adequate for capturing the grain scale mechanisms of soil behavior under im...

متن کاملDiscrete Element Modeling of the Effect of Particle Shape on Creep Behavior of Rockfills
Abstract—Rockfills are widely used in civil engineering, such as dams, railways, and airport foundations in mountain areas. A significant long-term post-construction settlement may affect the serviceability or even the safety of rockfill infrastructures. The creep behavior of rockfills is influenced by a number of factors, such as particle size, strength and shape, water condition and stress le...
متن کاملEnergy Dissipation Model of Particle Dampers
Particle damping is a type of impact damping that is designed to mitigate the response of lightly damped structures under dynamic loading. It consists of granular materials constrained to move between two ends of a cavity in a structure. When attached to a vibrating structure, the collisions of individual particles with cavity boundaries result in a reduction in the vibration amplitude of the s...
